you taste the region
Just past the Nieuwestad, you’ll find both the Oude and Nieuwe Oosterstraat. In these characterful streets, you’ll find (almost) everything that you could want, and more. Next to the baker, butcher, cheesemonger and even a shop that will sell you home-cooked meals to be eaten in your own house, you’ll find an Irish pub, vintage clothing stores; a shoe boutique and wonderful gift stores.
Shops - what to do?
The Oosterstraat is often referred to as a street with many faces. You can purchase organic meat at Zaak van Smaak, fresh bread or something sweet at Bekkerij van Eck, or a Frisian or French cheese at Koetshuysch, or a home-made, but instant dinner from Smakelijk. After your weekly shop, Leeuwarden-style, you’ve got time to relax by sneupen (casually searching) in Overenweer for second-hand bargains, or with a cup of tea at De Wereld van Thee. With hundreds of metres of pure shopping pleasure, the Oosterstraat is a lovely experience.
Paradoxically, the car-free Oosterstraat is also the location for a parking garage. A quick tip, though, during the week the garage is reserved for employees of the municipality and province offices. The Oosterstraat garage is open from 16:00 to 22:00 on weekends, on Fridays and Saturdays from 7:00 to 19:00 and every last Sunday of the month from 10:00 to 18:00.
