Fancy a city-trip to the North? Leeuwarden’s got you covered. Whether you come for the city itself, or use it as a springboard into Friesland, you’ll want to return to a comfy bed in the evening. We’ve listed our 5 best places to stay in Leeuwarden here!

1. Hotel Post-Plaza

The Post-Plaza Hotel on the Tweebaksmarkt in the middle of the city is a huge former post and banking HQ, now turned into a four-star hotel. Whilst all the historic soaring ceilings, ornate details, and interesting architecture has been preserved, the comfort is right up to date! Everything in the hotel has been thought through: from telling the story of the area in its menu, to providing excellent pointers for your cuty trip. Make sure to find time to relax in the Grand Café, too!

2. Weidumerhout

As soon as you leave the city of Leeuwarden, you’re surrounded by lush nature. There’s loads of little B&B’s and camp grounds around the city, but the Hotel Weidumerhout has something quite unique: a ‘panorama room’. These special rooms take the form of mostly-glass cubes, situated in the rolling Frisian countryside. You’ll sleep under a starry sky, and wake to the dawn chorus and morning sunshine; a truly Frisian experience!

3. Boutique Hotel Catshuis

A gorgeous historic city-centre canalside building has been turned into the most central hotel in the city! The Grand Café Fire, downstairs from your luxuriously-appointed room, has a lovely terrace on the central canal, too.

4. Alibi Hostel

A night in the cells isn’t normally criteria for a good weekend away, but at the Alibi Hostel you’ll sleep soundly in prison. The neo-gothic Blokhuispoort used to be a prison, but is not a culture centre, and the home of Alibi Hostel. The cells were built in 1875, and have been lovingly restored: though they now have comfy beds, spacious bathrooms, and a door that locks from the inside!
