Every year the ‘Vijf Mei Rede’ is held in the Dorpskerk Huizum by a prominent Dutchman. This year by Prof Dr Friso Wielenga. It is a lecture on Dutch-German relations since 1945. As a historian, he also enjoys fame across the border as he was director of the Zentrum für Niederlande-Studien at the Haus der Niederlande in Münster from 1999 to 2021 and was affiliated to the university there.
At this event, Ellen Pieterse (vocals) and Monique van de Ven (grand piano) will give a concert befitting this Liberation Day.
Marrit Jellema - as Leeuwarden's brand new city poet - will also give a performance. Her poems will be about freedom.

Because of Liberation Day, this special event will again be free to attend. Paying only the ticket cost (€1.00) is sufficient!

Friso Wielenga first taught international relations, Dutch and German political history at the universities of Groningen and Utrecht before receiving the mentioned honourable appointment in Münster. There, he received the Order of Merit for the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also awarded Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. At Dorpskerk Huizum, we are honoured by his arrival.

The Haus der Niederlande is known not only for the courses linked to the Dutch language there, but also because the agreement that ended the Eighty Years' War was signed there in 1648.

On 5 May, we commemorate the end of the German occupation. It may be called a miracle that Germany went from enemy to ally in just one generation. What lessons can we learn from this precisely on Liberation Day? Why is it that Germans seem to defend themselves more actively against serious threats to the rule of law than the Dutch? Friso Wielenga: ‘For decades on Liberation Day, Dutch images of Germany remained defined by the occupation period. When the West German Federal President Gustav Heinemann announced his intention to visit the Netherlands in 1970, he was made to understand that he would not be welcome during that whole year, because the Netherlands would celebrate 25 years of freedom during that year. Meanwhile, in May 2012, things were very different: then Federal President Joachim Gauck delivered the Freedom Speech in Breda on 5 May and celebrated with Queen Beatrix in Amsterdam in the evening.’

In his talk, Friso Wielenga will reflect on the celebration of 5 May since 1945, the development of Dutch-German relations since then and what this may mean for future 5 May celebrations.

This event is free to attend, but visitors are expected to book tickets in advance through the Ticket Office, for which a handling fee (€1.00) will be charged.
