The Prinsentuin has been a popular venue in the Frisian capital for small-scale concerts and events for many years. Its function as a park originated in 1648 but it was not opened to the public until 1795 after which it was laid out by L.P Roodbaard in 1822 and the music dome was given a place. And it still stands at this particular spot.

In 2004, the layout of the park was partly brought back to the atmosphere of Roodbaard's design. The Leeuwarder green space gained its fame partly because of Simon Vestdijk, who in his novel "De Koperen Tuin" (The Copper Garden) spoke of a carefree and stylish enjoyment of music in the beautiful dome.
