Leeuwarder Pride, Historical View

One of the most popular and also best-known sights in Leeuwarden is the Oldehove, also known as the Dutch Tower of Pisa. When the monumental attraction is described in a simple way, it is called “The Leaning Tower”. That's where the name of the restaurant comes from. Translated into Frisian “The Skeve Toren”.

The Oldehove is a free-standing church tower, the national monument has a history for which we go back in time to the year 1000. At that time there was a small church, which was enlarged in 1100. In the period from 1435 to 1576 a three-aisled Saint Vitus Church. In 1529 the order was given to build a wide tower to make it possible to build a high tower. When the tower was only ten meters high, it already started to sink.

In September 1576 the church collapsed as a result of a storm. In 1595 the church building was demolished and only the freestanding tower hull remained. The church building was completely demolished in 1706. Now the Oldehove church tower is open to the public to experience a beautiful image of Leeuwarden.
