Memorial concert Royal Toonkunstkoor Concordia conducted by Tjalling Wijnstra “ANNELIES” by James Whitbourn, a modern oratorio about Anne Frank.

On May 4, we commemorate everyone in the Netherlands who has died or been murdered in a war. Unfortunately, a very current theme. We quickly think of Anne Frank, whose diary gives us a glimpse into what the war meant for Jewish people. In 2005, the English composer James Whitbourn received permission from the Anne Frank Fund to set texts from Anne Frank's diary to music.
He collaborated with the writer and poet Melanie Challenger, who wrote the libretto based on texts from Anne's diary (Annelies Marie Frank). The soprano and the choir sing Anne's words, the choir comments on the events around her. The music and lyrics convey in a compelling way something of the joy and sadness, fear and hope that Anne must have felt.
