Erna flees the war in drawings

Erna was the daughter of Joël Rozenberg (Leeuwarden 1879 - Auschwitz 1942) and Minni Hess (Osnabrück 1890 - Auschwitz 1942). Father, mother and Erna were murdered in Auschwitz in November 1942. Both her sisters, Marie (Leeuwarden 1914 – Amsterdam 2000) and Edith (Leeuwarden 1917 – Amsterdam 2014), survived the war.

Erna grew up in a well-to-do family. Her father was a major livestock and meat exporter and held several positions within the Jewish community. The Rozenberg family lived in a beautiful house on Van Swietenstraat and Erna attended the stately Hofschool on Raadhuisplein.

The more than a hundred drawings that the young Erna made are partially inspired by the then popular comic strip Pam bij de Maanapen (which appeared in the Leeuwarder Courant in 1940 and 1941, among others). Several drawings have a clear link with Leeuwarden: buildings in Leeuwarden appear, Liwwadders (a Leeuwarden dialect) is spoken or Leeuwarden names are mentioned.

More than seventy years later, the drawings can be viewed by a large audience. As far as possible, an image of the girl behind the drawings is also sketched.
