New Dimensions of Sound by Black Pencil

Black Pencil is one of our country's most adventurous musical groups. In seamless interplay, this 5-piece ensemble provides swinging and hushed moments on a spectrum of 1,000 years of musical history. On Sunday afternoon, 12 May, Black Pencil explores new dimensions during the programme Into Space.

For 14 years, the adventurous Marko Kassl (accordion), Esra Pehlivanli (viola), Matthijs Koene (pan flute), Jorge Isaac (recorder) and Enric Monfort (percussion) have been making music together. At the time, hundreds of compositions were written for the group. In the programme Into Space, nature is the main source of inspiration. Wind, water, birds and the elusive universe.

The Theaterkrant wrote: “The colours that this ensemble manages to conjure up are of an otherworldly quality.” The title of nthe programme comes from Calliope Tsoupaki's work of the same name. It also includes works by Roderik de Man, Kate Moore, Wim Henderickx and others, all of which were written for the ensemble in collaboration with the Fonds Podiumkunsten (Performing Arts Fund).

Black Pencil's debut concert took place in 2010 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Since then, the ensemble has traveled to venues and festivals in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Spain, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, Indonesia and Venezuela. Black Pencil also makes its own concert series programmes and collaborates with Land Art Flevoland and Schokland UNESCO World
