For over 100 years, the Frisian Agricultural Museum has been telling the story of agriculture. In a beautiful, monumental farmhouse, you experience the rich history of farm life in Friesland. You are introduced to the world behind our food supply, nature management, and animal care.

The Frisian Agricultural Museum is a modern, lively museum. The museum displays the living, working, and housing conditions of the farmer during various periods. You see the farmer as a food producer, first for himself, later as a supplier to his surroundings, and still later as a linchpin in global food production. The story of the Frisian farmer is told through a valuable and extensive collection of agricultural tools and objects used in arable farming, livestock farming, and dairy production. Everything is brought to an even greater sense by the short films from bygone eras.

Location of the national monument farmhouse
South of Leeuwarden stands the beautiful national monument farmhouse at Felling number 6, which houses the Frisian Agricultural Museum. The museum is located in the new Middelsee district, a unique urban expansion of Leeuwarden currently under construction, directly beneath the Van Harinxma Canal. In this museum farmhouse dating back to 1909, you will find 2000 years of history of Frisian agriculture: arable farming, the dairy industry, agricultural mechanization, and the farmhouse as a cathedral of the landscape and culture. The stories the museum tells show you how agriculture constantly innovates, whether or not forced by circumstances. You experience the impact that agriculture has had and continues to have on culture, the economy, the landscape, and the countryside.

This majestic animal, once indispensable as a draft animal in agriculture, has grown into the black pearl of Friesland and an international sensation. With its jet-black appearance, elegant build, and friendly character, it captures hearts in Hollywood films, at equestrian events, and in popular series like Game of Thrones. During the exhibition, you will take a journey through the rich history of this special breed and see how it has repeatedly adapted to the demands of the times. Be surprised by stories, impressive images, and interactive experiences that bring the strength, beauty, and willing attitude of this black pearl to life. An absolute must for horse lovers and anyone fascinated by culture and heritage. 

For more than 100 years
In 2025, it will be one hundred years since the first Agricultural Museum was established in Friesland. We will be celebrating this anniversary this year. The museum has been located in various places in Friesland, but since 2018, it has been housed in a beautiful listed farmhouse in Leeuwarden. The final new construction will be completed in 2025, coinciding with our 100th anniversary. It will be a double celebration with the beautifully newly designed exhibitions on dairy, livestock farming, and arable farming.

There is a permanent exhibition, but various temporary exhibitions are also displayed throughout the year. For the children, there is a fun scavenger hunt where they can learn how to milk, among other things.
