On this walking tour, we set out to discover the Leeuwarden of painter Wybrand de Geest. In the 17th century, he was the city’s most important portrait painter. From 6 September onwards, a major retrospective exhibition about his work can be seen at the Fries Museum.
During the tour, we visit the places where he lived and worked, allowing us to explore some of the most beautiful spots in the city. We also tell his story through portraits — both 17th-century works displayed in some of Leeuwarden’s finest historic buildings and contemporary portraits found right on the streets. Leeuwarden is home to a wealth of striking street art, often inspired by the old masters.
