Christmas Tree on Wilhelminaplein

Miscellaneous

until 3 January

From Saturday 6 December, a Christmas tree that’s just a little different will be standing on Wilhelminaplein. Not a tree that will be cut down this year and end up as compost next year. No — this is a living Nordmann fir, complete with root ball, ready to shine year after year to come!

In many cities, a new tree appears every year — but Leeuwarden chooses a sustainable and circular approach. This 10-metre tree has been specially grown to be replanted and stands securely in a reusable container. In a few years’ time, it will be given a new permanent home, making room for a fresh tree in the container the following year. Smart and green!

This 10-metre tree has been specially grown to be replanted and stands securely in a reusable container. The tree looks stunning on the square, anchored with sustainably sourced Dutch timber and decorated with energy-efficient LED lights designed to last for many years. Standing at an impressive 11.5 metres tall, it’s a real eye-catcher — perfect for those festive photos for your feed. But this tree does more than just shine on your pictures. It also brings warmth into the real world. This year, it supports the local charity Quiet Leeuwarden, which helps people living in hidden poverty. Scan the QR code by the tree to donate directly. That way, you’re not only brightening your feed, but also someone’s Christmas.
