Experience – no – feel the story of Mata Hari. In her birthplace, where she looked out over the streets of Leeuwarden through the windows, Kroft&Smids shows Mata Hari’s life through light.
This event is part of 150 Years of Mata Hari. Throughout this anniversary year, Leeuwarden celebrates the life of Mata Hari with art, dance, theatre, exhibitions, tours, festivals and much more. The programme runs from 22 May until 22 August (Mata Hari's birthday) and can be found here.
As a child, Mata Hari – then still known as Greetje – would gaze through the windows of her father's hat shop at the bustling world outside. Businessmen in long coats, mothers looking after lively families, people hurrying past, and others with all the time in the world. These scenes shaped her view of life from an early age – a life she believed could be far greater and more extraordinary than everyday reality.

During the immersive light experience Echoes of Mata Hari by artist duo Kroft&Smids (known, among other projects, for Decemberlicht), you'll follow Mata Hari's remarkable story, from her birth in the Frisian capital to her tragic fate in France. The experience lasts approximately 15–20 minutes and is free of charge.
Please note that Echoes of Mata Hari is an intimate immersive experience for a maximum of ten visitors at a time. We therefore recommend reserving your place in advance.
