Maritime symposium Alle hens op 't dek

Lecture/Debate

27 March

A maritime symposium on the daily lives of Frisian seafarers (17th–19th century).

On Friday 27 March, the Working Group for Maritime History of the Fryske Akademy, in collaboration with the Fries Scheepvaart Museum and Tresoar, will organise a symposium focusing on the daily lives of Frisian ship crews, both on land and at sea.

Maritime trade forms an important part of Frisian history. In the 17th and 18th centuries, large numbers of Frisians were involved in overseas freight shipping. They built upon the trade networks that had connected the North Sea and Baltic regions with the European Atlantic coasts and Mediterranean ports since the Middle Ages.

This symposium focuses on everyday life on board ships and on shore for skippers and their crews. Questions addressed include the organisation on board, the composition of often international crews, internal hierarchies, and the risks at sea, ranging from damage and shipwreck to piracy and captivity.
