Spruitjes met sambal

Exhibitions

until 3 May

The exhibition Spruitjes met sambal, in which visitors are introduced to the story of Indo-Dutch people in Leeuwarden.

Between late 1945 and 1968, more than 300,000 people emigrated from Indonesia to the Netherlands. The exhibition Spruitjes met sambal (Brussels sprouts with sambal)  tells the story of the Indo-Dutch people who settled in Leeuwarden. Their arrival brought new flavours and aromas to the city. Leeuwarden residents set aside their white rice with butter and sugar and were introduced to nasi goreng and nasi rames. Before long, Indo-Dutch families were adding sambal to their Brussels sprouts.

Alongside the history of Indo-Dutch people in Leeuwarden, the exhibition also presents six personal stories of Indo-Dutch Leeuwarders. These stories explore connections to the Netherlands, delicious food, a strict upbringing, Indo-Dutch mysticism and the complex Indo-Dutch past.
