Elfstegentocht

Hike

until 24 October

A walk through the narrow streets and courtyards of the oldest part of the city. Past the city’s hidden corners. Leeuwarden is a true city of narrow streets, just like Harlingen and Amsterdam, for example.

In 1870, Leeuwarden’s city centre had as many as 66 alleys less than three metres wide. Fifty of these alleys were even narrower than one and a half metres. The total length of these alleys was more than two kilometres. We often fail to realise that the oldest alleys in Leeuwarden date back to the late Middle Ages.
