150 years of Mata Hari - Mata Hari pop-up expo | Station hall
In 2017, the Fries Museum's exhibition 'Mata Hari – The Myth and the Girl' was a great success. With this pop-up exhibition, the museum reveals the true story of Mata Hari.
This event is part of 150 Years of Mata Hari . We are celebrating this anniversary year in Leeuwarden with art, dance, theater, parties, exhibitions, tours, and much more. The program runs from May 23 to August 7 (Mata Hari's birthday) and can be found here .
Long, long ago, somewhere around 1891, Margarethe Zelle left Leeuwarden for good. She marched through the station hall, waited a while on the platform, and finally took the train. She left little behind: her mother had passed away, her father had vanished without a trace. But in Leeuwarden lay her innocence, her youth, her sense of security—that which she would find in few other places.
In that same station hall, you will now find the Fries Museum's pop-up exhibition – which shows what kind of woman Mata Hari really was. What courage it took to make the choices she made, and how she faced the consequences – from the moment she stepped onto that one train.
This exhibition was curated by the Fries Museum. Since 2017, following the major Mata Hari exhibition, Mata Hari has been given a permanent place in the museum. You can find The Lives of Mata Hari here . Look here for more information about the museum and this permanent exhibition.
