Have you always wanted to know where your ancestors come from? Or have you already started doing family tree research, but are you stuck? On Sunday 22 June, you will have the opportunity to further unravel the history of your family. 

During this programme, genealogy expert Huub van Helvoort will teach you how to start doing ancestral research and how to best approach it. The event focuses primarily on family history in Suriname and the Caribbean Dutch islands. Do you have roots in these areas and would you like to learn more about your family history and the history of the overseas Netherlands? Then this programme is especially for you.

In addition to the research, there are additional activities, such as a lecture by Peggy Brandon on the state of affairs surrounding the National Slavery Museum, a film screening and in-depth insights into the role of Friesland in the history of slavery.

Attending the programme is free and includes lunch. We do ask you to register in advance. 

Programme: 

11:00 am - 11:30 am | Walk-in with coffee and tea.

11:30 am - 11:35 am | Welcome speech by Johan Steendam (Tresoar), Peggy Brandon (Curator and former museum quartermaster for the National Slavery Museum) and Mavis Brewster (Board member of the Committee 30 June-1 July Fryslân).

11:35 am - 12:15 pm | Lecture by Peggy Brandon on the state of affairs surrounding the National Slavery Museum + questions.

12:15 pm - 12:45 pm | Film screening Bloodlines: a shared history, made by Fifi Visser and André van der Hout.

1:00 pm- 1:30 pm | Lunch.

Option A:

1:30 pm - 3:15 pm | Genealogical research by Huub van Helvoort (Surinamese & Caribbean genealogical researcher) – "How do you do ancestral research?" Bring pen and paper and especially your own device (laptop, tablet, phone)! The maximum number of participants is 25 people. 

Option B:

1:30 pm - 3:15 pm | Lecture and discussion about traces of the slavery past in Friesland with Nykle Dijkstra (Information Specialist at Historical Center Leeuwarden) and Harsono Sokromo (Cultural Education Advisor at Fawaka WereldBurgerschap).

3:15 pm - 3:45 pm | Closing and drinks with coffee and tea – Opportunity to talk to each other.
