Alexander Tuinhout on the Halifax Crash near Jellum

Alexander Tuinhout of the Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation (SMAMF) talks about the historical research into the final flight of W1220 and the airmen on board.
On 5 September 1942, two British bombers crashed within a short time of each other in what is now the municipality of Leeuwarden. At 3:39 am, Halifax W1220 crashed near the Dokkumer Ee in theJelsumer Aldlân after coming under fire from the ‘Leeuwarden’ night fighter Egmont zur Lippe Weissenfeld. The entire crew – four Australians and three Britons – were killed and buried in Jelsum cemetery.

Earlier this year, the foundation worked with Doarpsbelang Jelsum-Koarnjum to create an information panel about the crash near Jelsum village church. It was unveiled on 4 May by relatives of the crew.
