Redbad Visser on Game of Thrones in Friesland

In his lecture, Redbad Visser explores the origins of the conflicts in the 14th century and traces the course of the struggle that was finally settled in the early 16th century. In Leeuwarden, the last executions took place near the Kanselarij on the Turfmarkt and on the Brol.
The Leeuwarden Beer Riot of 1487 was just one of many bloody episodes in a conflict that pitted Frisians against Frisians. The campaigns of Grutte Pier and Wierd Jelckama were another.
For more than two centuries, rival Frisian factions – the Schieringers and Vetkopers – fought for control of medieval Friesland, an area encompassing present-day Fryslân, Groningen and East Frisia. These armed conflicts between the Frisians themselves represent the darker side of the period known as Frisian Freedom. At times, however, the rival factions joined forces when Friesland came under attack from outside, particularly from Holland. Having already subdued the West Frisians, Holland repeatedly attempted to gain a foothold on the other side of the Zuiderzee.
