Meindert Ley on Hunter-Gatherers in North Friesland

In this lecture, Meindert Ley explores the way these hunter-gatherers lived and how their lives were shaped by the natural environment. Traces of settlements have also been discovered within the municipality of Leeuwarden.
During the Mesolithic, or Middle Stone Age (c. 8300–3000 BC), hunter-gatherers lived on the higher, densely wooded sandy soils of the time. Their way of life was entirely shaped by what nature provided. Traces of settlements have also been discovered within the municipality of Leeuwarden. These camps were often inhabited for only short periods. Their remains were later covered first by peat and then by clay as groundwater levels rose and the sea repeatedly flooded the area.
