Explore the alleys, narrow passageways and hidden courtyards of the oldest part of the city on foot.
Leeuwarden is a true city of alleys, just like Harlingen and Amsterdam. In 1870, Leeuwarden’s historic city centre had no fewer than 66 alleys less than three metres wide, 50 of which were narrower than just one and a half metres. Together, they stretched for more than two kilometres.
It is easy to forget that Leeuwarden’s oldest alleys date all the way back to the late Middle Ages.
