Museum de Grutterswinkel showcases life around a real old-fashioned grocery store, complete with everything that goes with it. In "the good old days," before supermarkets, there were small, cozy grocer's shops where the cash register still truly rang and groceries were sold over the counter in paper cones. In the heart of Leeuwarden, such an authentic grocery store still exists, housed in a seventeenth-century building at Nieuwesteeg 5. From 1900 onwards, 'all' of Leeuwarden shopped at the Feenstra family's store for colonial goods and groceries.
The museum features rotating exhibitions. Approximately 15.000 visitors come to take a look at this museum each year. The many reactions clearly show that the nostalgic atmosphere appeals immensely to people. The museum consists of various rooms, almost all of which are freely accessible. In the former living rooms, a fresh cup of coffee or tea is served with orange cake and a real Frysk Dúmke. Beneath the coffee room is a wine cellar with a barrel vault, more than four centuries old. On the first floor is the back house, where it becomes clear how a small family used to live, complete with the box bed and the húske (toilet).
