Blokhuispoort

The Blokhuispoort is a former prison in Leeuwarden that was built in 1593. Today, it is a multifunctional building housing cultural and creative spaces, among other things.

De Blokhuispoort is a cultural business center located in the vibrant city center of Leeuwarden. Where prisoners were once held, the creative minds behind the businesses based here now work. In the former prison, you can currently find a hostel, a Drink & Eat establishment, and several small boutiques, among other things. In this inspiring environment, approximately 130 entrepreneurs work (together), providing the finest products and services.

The most diverse cultural events are also organized in this historic setting.

Drink & Eat Local Tasting Leave
Proefverlof is located in the second courtyard of De Blokhuispoort. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee, a drink, lunch, or dinner. For more information, visit www.proefverlof.frl. 

Hostel Alibi
You can even sleep in the old prison of Leeuwarden at Hostel Alibi. Want to know what it feels like to spend the night in a cell? Book directly via www.alibihostel.nl. 

Cell block H
In the cell block, you will find all kinds of creative people with their own little shops. Jewelry, cards, art, and design are sold here. A diverse group of small entrepreneurs with unique products, all of whom have a connection to the Blokhuispoort in their own way.

dbieb
As of 2018, the Leeuwarden library is located in the prison. In dbieb, you will find Café de Bak, where you can grab a quick cup of coffee and lunch. For more information, visit www.dbieb.nl.

Discover the Blokhuispoort

You are welcome at this unique location seven days a week. There is plenty to see and do ! View the historic cells, the bunker, the boardroom, and more daily during a private tour or an open tour with a former guard. Discover the exciting building and listen to masterful stories about escapes and the rough life in prison. Open tours are every Saturday at 14:00 PM and 16:00 PM, and on Sundays at 11:0 AM.

In addition, there are VIP packages that shine a light on the restoration of the national monument, the Blokhuispoort.
