The heart of Leeuwarden will turn green for 100 days. From May 7 to August 14, more than 1000 large and small trees ‘walk’ through the city centre. The ‘walking’ forest gives the trees - and therefore nature - a voice: How does the forest view the human world? The slow-moving art installation by Bosk draws attention to the need for us to look differently at the relationship between man and nature, to make different choices in making of our public spaces green, and to plant more trees in the world to help turn the climate crisis.

A walking forest

The squares are the open spaces in the forest, which are being graced by cultural activities that reinforce the story of the ‘walking’ forest. In addition to setting up a cultural, educational and in-depth programme, Bosk is also the driving force behind all kinds of green initiatives in the city centre and suburbs of Leeuwarden, and in the province of Fryslân. This autonomous work of art was initiated by the late Joop Mulder (Sense of Place) and envisioned by Bruno Doedens (SLeM) in close collaboration with Arcadia.

Get Bosk moving - Helping hands!

The ‘walking’ forest can’t possibly be set in action without manpower. Bosk participants contribute to ‘walking’ the trees. The trees are moved, cared for and fed manually, and this requires a lot of helping hands. Will you help get Bosk ‘moving’? You can do this alone, with a friend, with your neighbours, but also with your association, department or even entire organization. How about an active team outing in Bosk?

Arcadia 2022 - 100 days

Bosk is part of Arcadia, the sequel to Leeuwarden-Fryslân as the Cultural Capital of 2018. Arcadia consists of a 100-day cultural programme that draws attention to the future of mienskip (society), landscape and heritage. For a hundred summer days, makers and doers who want to change the world are given a stage in the province: a ‘walking’ forest in the streets of Leeuwarden, an international visual art exhibition in the greenery of Oranjewoud, or a province-wide mienskips programme about ice rinks, doing things yourself and together, and climate change. And again in three years, because 2022 is only the first edition of the Arcadia triennial.
