With a good breakfast in your belly, it’s time for action! Luckily, there’s still plenty to do in Leeuwarden on a Monday – for the young, the old, and everyone in between.

  • Get a breath of fresh air at Buuten! Take a long walk through the unspoiled landscapes of the Kleine Wielen or Grote Wielen, enjoy a wheelchair and stroller-friendly route through Park Vijversburg, or head to the dog beach with your four-legged friend. Not much of a walker? Rent a boat at Bootverhuur Bonkevaart and explore the nature reserve from the water.

  • At AquaZoo, it’s not just monkeys you’ll meet. This zoo is home to no fewer than 88 different animal species. From wallabies to otters, polar bears to crocodiles, and fish to flamingos – you’ll find them all at the northernmost zoo in the Netherlands.

  • Have you met Leeuwarden’s pride and joy?
    The Oldehove, our very own leaning tower, has been standing tall in the old city centre for nearly 500 years. From April to October, you can climb it and enjoy a fantastic view over the city. Between 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm, you can buy a ticket from the tower warden and make your way all the way to the top. A must-do for anyone visiting Leeuwarden!

If you’ve ever arrived in Leeuwarden by train, you’ve no doubt seen them: the serene children's faces of the LOVE Fountain. In honor of Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 – the year Leeuwarden was the European Capital of Culture – all eleven Frisian cities were given their own fountain. Each fountain comes with a walking route that guides you past the city's highlights. In Leeuwarden, check out the 'Love' fountain by Jaume Plensa and enjoy the surprises along the way. Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden

At Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden – or HCL, as locals call it – you’ll find a variety of rotating exhibitions. Think: Leeuwarden in illustrations, a photo exhibition of famous local cats, or a thrilling display about Moord en Doodslag (Murder and Manslaughter). The current exhibition at HCL is free to visit and open on Mondays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Want to learn more about the history of Leeuwarden and Friesland?
