Stadsastronaut - Marjolijn van Heemstra | The Summer Sessions

A guide for the future

Since the dawn of space travel, astronauts have been overcome by love for our planet in the vast darkness. And what you love, you want to protect. We have to zoom out, is their message. See how everything is intertwined with everything and how vulnerable we are in that huge universe. Seeing life through the eyes of a spaceman gives us the perspective we so lack right now. A look beyond the delusions of the day in which we exhaust ourselves and the earth. Well said. But how?

A guide for the future

Since the dawn of space travel, astronauts have been overcome by love for our planet in the vast darkness. And what you love, you want to protect. We have to zoom out, is their message. See how everything is intertwined with everything and how vulnerable we are in that huge universe. Seeing life through the eyes of a spaceman gives us the perspective we so lack right now. A look beyond the delusions of the day in which we exhaust ourselves and the earth. Well said. But how?

Author and theatre-maker Marjolijn van Heemstra subjected herself to Stadsastronaut  and the book In lichtjaren heeft niemand haast (2021) to an astronaut training course in a few months, in the hope of finding a manual for the future. With the help of space specialists, futurologists, science-fiction and her neighbor Bob, she zooms in on daily life step-by-step. At least that's the attempt. Stadsastronaut is a theatrical lecture by a do-it-yourself astronaut in search of the greatest in the smallest. Ideal and reality brought together in a cautious plea for more faith in the future. For ourselves, but especially for those who are still to come.
