Cornelis Bruinsma The Filming Bridge Keeper
From August 8, a small exhibition about the life and work of bridge keeper and amateur filmmaker Cornelis Bruinsma can be seen at HCL.
Cornelis (Cees) Bruinsma (1925-1988) was a familiar face to many people in Leeuwarden. For many years he worked as a bridge keeper, mainly at the Vrouwenpoortsbrug.
Cees had a great passion for filmmaking. He was active as an amateur filmmaker from 1958 to 1985. During these more than 25 years, he captured sixty hours of footage. His focus was primarily on Leeuwarden and his daily work as a bridge keeper. He also filmed his colleagues at the Municipality of Leeuwarden: from the garbage collection service to the mayor and the city council.
One year after his retirement, Cees passed away at the age of 62.
The films of Cees Bruinsma are preserved in the collection of the Fries Film & Audio Archief (FFAA) and can be viewed via the FFAA website .
From Bruinsma's perspective, the film collection offers a snapshot of Leeuwarden in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. As such, the 'filming bridge keeper's' collection forms a valuable part of the cultural heritage of both Leeuwarden and Fryslân.
The exhibition features a compilation of Leeuwarden film footage by Cornelis Bruinsma, compiled by the FFAA.
This exhibition is a collaboration between the FFAA and the HCL.
