In the summer of 2021, the Princessehof will be presenting Maria Louise was here. During the summer months, visitors can gather in the palace garden for eight weekends, three times a week, late at night for a poetic Son et lumière in which video, music and light come together. A corona-proof open-air event in the middle of the historic city centre of Leeuwarden.

In the summer of 2021, the Princessehof will be presenting Maria Louise was here. During the summer months, visitors can gather in the palace garden for eight weekends, three times a week, late at night for a poetic Son et lumière in which video, music and light come together. A corona-proof open-air event in the middle of the historic city centre of Leeuwarden.

The summer evening spectacle in the garden of the Princessehof includes video projections on the façades of the city palace, a specially composed piece of music, special lighting for the garden and a stimulating additional programme. Maria Louise was here sketches a modern portrait of a strong woman in a male-dominated world: Maria Louise of Hesse-Kassel, Princess of Orange-Nassau (1688-1765), ancestor of our current King. Theatre maker Jos van Kan directs. Together with media artist Frouke ten Velden, he gives shape to this project in a poetic and stimulating way, making clever use of the architecture of the Princessehof. Maria Louise is played by actress Ariana Schluter.

Max Knigge composed a piece of music especially for the performance, which is being performed by the Noord-Nederlands Orkest. The composition has been specially written so that the 29 musicians of the Noord-Nederlands Orkest (Northern Netherlands Orchestra) can record the music within the applicable corona rules.
