The common thread in Bach's St. John Passion is the Bible text traditionally read on Good Friday, John 18 and 19. Jesus is captured, brought before Caiaphas and Pilate, convicted, crucified and dies. The Bible text is recited by the tenor soloist (the evangelist) and the different roles (Jesus, Pilate, the disciples, the people) are filled by the other singers. At key moments Bach added well-known church songs, which he had the entire ensemble sing and play. For the solo arias he used poetry from popular passion collections by Barthold Heinrich Brockes and others.
