À la campagne: het Franse licht van Maris tot Monet

The French Impressionists at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Musuem, are temporarily moving to Leeuwarden. The À la campagne exhibition shows what an important part light played in their art: sunbeams glitter on the water’s surface, light filters through foliage and the wind dances on the canvas.

The exhibition consists of over ninety paintings and drawings, ranging from poppy fields, gentle coasts and blossoming orchards, to raging seas, low horizons and pastures full of cows.

The works include popular favourites and undiscovered gems by artists like Cézanne, Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Sisley and Boudin. They chart the development of this ‘French view’ from the Barbizon school to (post-)impressionism. Dutch artists like Maris and Weissenbruch also contributed to this development, and are on display at the Fries Museum too.
