Vrijheid, Vetes, Vagevuur: de middeleeuwen in het Noorden (Freedom, Feuds, Purgatory: The Middle Ages in the North)

From September 10, 2022 to May 7, 2023, the Fries Museum presents Freedom, Feuds, Purgatory: The Middle Ages in the North. The exhibition shows new scientific insights into the society of the North in the High and Late Middle Ages. The Friesland of that time (Tota Frisia) stretched from the current province of Friesland to the Weser in the German East Frisia. Unlike elsewhere in Europe, the Frisians governed themselves, chose their own judges, had their own language and their own distinctive clothing style. Based on the rich archaeological collection of medieval objects in the Fries Museum, supplemented by (inter)national loans, the idiosyncratic, vanished world of Friesland between 1067-1567 comes to life. This large exhibition fits in seamlessly with the highly acclaimed We Vikings  in 2019.
