Alexander Tuinhout on Lancaster Crash at Warten
A unique opportunity to find out what happened to him during the fatal flight presented itself in 2017, when the wreckage of Lancaster R5682 was recovered by the Defence.
On September 5, 1942, two British bombers crashed in quick succession on the territory of the present-day municipality of Leeuwarden. At 02:51, residents of Earnewâld and Warten were startled by an aerial battle that ended in the crash of Lancaster R5682 in the Alde Feanen. Two crew members lost their lives in the crash, while four others survived by deploying their parachutes in time. The fate of the seventh crew member, Canadian tail gunner James Cooper, remained unknown for decades.
A unique opportunity to find out what happened to him during the fatal flight presented itself in 2017, when the wreckage of Lancaster R5682 was recovered by the Ministry of Defence. The Missing Airmen Memorial Foundation (SMAMF) was closely involved in the excavation of the aircraft wreckage and handled, among other things, the historical research and contact with the surviving relatives of the crew.
