CO2-2 - City Proms

CO2-2
Life begins with the first breath and it ends with the last. Our life cycle is linked to that of trees and plants. We use oxygen and give carbon dioxide. Plants and trees use carbon dioxide and give oxygen. Together we have a breathing cycle and trees and people cannot live without each other.
The duduk, piri, aulos, ney and pan flute are instruments made of wood and reed. They come alive through our breath and make sounds that appeal to the singing voice. We give a concert in BOSK with these instruments from all over the world. Five players move like lungs, pulsating slowly. They start together at a central location, each follow their own path in BOSK to the edge of the forest and then come back together. The musicians play and improvise on the piece Thin Air by Calliope Tsoupaki.
Musicians:
Duduk: Raphaela Danksagmuller (Almere) on 22-7 and Ghaeth Almaghoot (Rotterdam) on 23-7
Ney: Sinan Arat (Rotterdam)
Pan flute: Marlies de Roos (Amersfoort)
Aulos: Lukas de Clerck (Brussels)
Piri: Irma Kort (The Hague)

Education
In the weeks before CityProms, an educational program revolves around BOSK and CO2-2. We are going to three classes in secondary education. From the book 'The Hidden Life of Trees' by Peter Wohlleben we highlight a number of examples and quotes about the essence of a tree, the ecosystem and the balance between us and the forests. In addition, we examine our breathing: from the first breath to the last. We talk about balance and cooperation. In the afternoons of 22 and 23 June, young people will be paired with the elderly. These couples enter the BOSK together between 6.30 pm and 8 pm. We link these generations, because people in different age groups often have a different experience or perspective on a subject. In this way we create the opportunity to share perspectives and strengthen connections between the different groups.

CityProms unpacks with the largest orchestra in the Northern Netherlands
CityPromsFestival aims to assemble the largest orchestra in the Northern Netherlands at the end of June. In All Together Now everyone plays together on the Wilhelminaplein: orchestras, choirs, musicians and singers. All Together Now was written by Martin Fondse, the Composer Laureate, and is the start of his 12 Provinces project, which will be rolled out over the next two years. CityProms is from June 22 to 26. After the premiere in Leeuwarden, the project will be performed three more times in other parts of the Netherlands. Martin Fondse: “So I am taking the first big step in the North at CityProms. And I'm really looking forward to it.”
All Together Now calls on participants from Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland to participate in the concert on Wilhelminaplein, which will become a large open-air stage on Sunday 26 June. Information about rehearsals and how you can participate can be found on cityproms.nl. Serious, cheerful and techno: CityProms focuses even more on other music styles and forms this year. “The festival should matter, for the widest possible audience. The program is versatile and often interactive. Because music connects people. Embrace Nederland's social projects are a good example of this," says artistic director Irma Kort in the run-up to her first CityProms. “Happy, but also serious and socially engaged. Classic and at the same time modern and contemporary. Free for young and old and for everyone. That is CityProms.” Spoken word and Free Heri Heri, the program is taking shape.
