Inspired by the at the time scandalous novels Rubber (1931) and Koelie (1932) by Madelon Székely-Lulofs, a writer ahead of her time, Happiness Seekers in Sumatra delves into an often romanticised past. A history full of inequality, repression and stifling promises of wealth that still leaves its mark today.
