Gelukzoekers op Sumatra (happiness seekers in Sumatra)
Gelukzoekers op Sumatra (happiness seekers in Sumatra)
Following the success of The Interpreter of Java and Lichter dan ik (Lighter Than Me), here is another performance that shows the underexposed side of the Dutch colonial occupation of Indonesia. Inspired by the at the time scandalous novels Rubber (1931) and Koelie (1932) by Madelon Székely-Lulofs, a writer ahead of her time, Happiness Seekers in Sumatra delves into an often romanticised past. A history full of inequality, repression and stifling promises of wealth that still leaves its mark today.
