Autumn break: Become a water hero
During the autumn break, children will do assignments and experiments related to water conservation.
Clever Ton and Sjaak Verspil
Meet Clever Ton and Sjaak the Waste during the autumn break. They are going to challenge children to make choices regarding water usage. Sjaak the Waste is a garden hose and prefers to spray the plants with tap water every day. Clever Ton doesn't think that's a good idea: he encourages children to put a rain barrel in the garden to collect rainwater. Ton and Sjaak would like to give their opinion, but the children make the choice themselves.
Water saving
The theme for this autumn holiday is water conservation. Children will tour the atrium, visiting several locations such as a gazebo, shop, house, and lab. With a water conservation card in hand, they will complete tasks and save water. Those who do exceptionally well will become water heroes.
Experiments and assignments
In the lab, for example, they will conduct experiments to find out which water is suitable for drinking and which water contains a lot of salt. In the shop, they discover more about 'hidden' water: how much water does it cost to get an apple to the store, and is that more or less than a mango? And is it better to buy new jeans or second-hand ones? There are also many ways to save at home, such as with the toilet and the shower.
Insight
Through the activities, children gain insight into the water cycle and the difference between a tiled garden and a planted garden. They discover that items in the store, such as a T-shirt, hamburger, and toys, also require water. The use of AI also requires a lot of water. The good news is that water can be reused. By making a water filter, they learn exactly how that works.
About the theme
During the autumn holidays, a social issue always takes center stage. This year, that is water conservation. Through these activities, the museum aims to raise awareness among the young target group. How much water is used in the home, garden, and immediate surroundings, and how can one use it more sparingly? The museum is collaborating with Rabobank and Wetsus for this purpose.
Practical
The autumn break runs from 10 to 25 October 2026. Opening hours are: 10 to 18 October (autumn break North region): daily from 10:00 to 17:00, including Mondays. After that, the museum is open according to regular opening hours. The autumn break activities remain in place through the free Tuesday on 27 October.
